Music Video Theories

Andrew Goodwin's Theory

  • Music videos are to demonstrate genre characteristics (dance routine / stage performance / narrative)
  • They may link to film genres and have intertextual references (Rock influenced by crime / horror films)
  • There are frequent references to looking (mirrors, telescopes, screens) and portray voyeuristic treatment of the female body
  • There is always a link between the music and the visuals (illustration or amplification)
  • Lots of artist close ups will be incorporated in the style of their identity and will cross reference between music videos
  • Narrative is included to tell the story of the lyrics
Sven E Carlsson's Theory

  • Videos are broken into categories of opposites: good/bad and black/white (trash/art, commerce/creativity, male/female, naturalism/ antirealism)
  • Videos are either performance videos or conception videos
    • Performance videos are based around the singer/ band performing and showing their musicianship and talent.
    • Conception videos are based around materialistic/ aesthetic appearances created around a narrative
  • Musicians may use the video to sell their musicianship, lifestyle, or body image

My Opinion

I feel that both theories have concepts that I agree with and feel should be abided by during the planning and creation of a music video; however I prefer Goodwin's theory in comparison.

This is because I think that the genre of the music needs to have a large influence on the conventions of the video in order to target it to the correct audience, If a video does not relate to genre then the video would not be able to sell a realistic identity of the performer especially within rock band / indie music where musicianship is important to show.

I also agree with the element of intertextuality being incorporated as it gives the audience something to relate to within the music video which will help sell the song and artist.

Even though their are some very good music videos in the style of disjuncture I do agree with the fact that the video should have a relation to the lyrics; however how much relation their is may vary due to the style of the video as I think that some of the best music videos are memorable by being very unique and breaking conventions.
