Developed Narrative Storyboard

Lyric Shot Ideas

We have written up ideas on the lyrics for our chosen track in order to plan the structure of our music video. This is to ensure that the recording and editing stages work together with all footage idea's being filmed in case required upon in editing ideas and plans.

Developed Narrative Idea

Due to our location change and the new woodland area around the new location which we are able to film on, we have decided to develop our narrative to aid the continuity of the video and allow us to film more of our video in the same location.

The changes of our narrative include the burning photo being changed to memories of happy times being concealed within a wooden box and then buried within woodland area. The contrasting clips of the happy couple will still be incorporated and then the burying of the box will signify the break up between the couple. We are going to film some short clips at a firework display of the couple happy together to show more examples of the couples happy times together.

We have continued to base our narrative around amplification but have developed it to realte to the lyrics of digging a hole and burying feelings.

Performance Location Change

The new location which we have been permitted to use is a farm in Pickworth. This farm has an old looking barn with a large metal shutter door and stylistic features such as old thick wooden support beams and aged brickwork. We are happy with the new location we have found and after looking around have come to the conclusion that it is in fact a more suitable location due to the large woodland area around the farm which will possibly allow us to film some of the narrative at the same location. As this new location is similar to our old one we do not need to change the plans in progress for our filming.

Below are some shots of the barn we will be using for the performance location.

Group Meeting 28/10/13

After keeping in contact with the people who are allowing us to film on the location it turns out that our permission to film in the barn location has fallen though. After discussing other locations we decided we wanted to try and stick with the barn location as planned and got in contanct with some more owners of barns.

We came across a farm in Pickworth which an ex colleague works at and after contacting the owner have been given permission to film on this location on our previously planned date.

Music Deconstruction

Here I have deconstructed the track using comments on SoundCloud to brainstorm ideas on different shots and to get a general overview of the basic construction of our music video.

Laser Lighting Idea

Inspiration

After watching the video for 'Earth Medicine' By 'We Are Fiction' we all liked the creative lighting used in the live shots with the use of warm back lighting and the use of a laser to add some color and creativity to the shots. The use of lasers in this genre is not very conventional as the music videos are usually created very low budget in small venues where the lighting is very basic and more natural with not many gobos, effects, or colors; however we feel that the use of it in this video creates a unique and memorable effect that works well with the live shots, and helping them keep interesting.

We are going to try and create a similar effect with the lighting equipment we have already arranged to borrow and use from various people but after taken influence from this video we have decided to use a 4 Lens Laser light owned by me along with the previous lighting to attempt to create a similar effect from this video. In order for this to work we will need a smokey atmosphere at the right density so that we can still get clear shots whilst still enhancing the lighting and laser effects.

Below is a picture of the laser light we intend to use and a video of it in action in a smokey atmosphere.

Try Out Shot's - Burning Photo

We have done some try out shots of burning photos as we plan to incorporate this idea into our narrative. By doing try out shots we will see what the shots will turn out like and will be able to decide if we think they will work well for the narrative or discuss other options if the result isn't as good as we thought.

Costume Planning

For our costume we wanted to keep it very stereotypical of a hardcore video, so for our video we have chosen to have a very basic costume design, we have chosen just a simple t-shirt (maybe a band shirt if possible) and then some casual jeans and trainers, this means the actors have a very simple look to them, focusing on the video and what is going on more than the clothes.
I have taken a few screenshots from other hardcore music video to show how we have taken influence from them to get our choice of clothing.

Prop Planning

Instruments

The Sechter Omen 8 string guitar is the instrument that our track was recorded with and is the instrument that will feature within the video. This guitar looks very attractive and is very large due to having 8 strings rather than the conventional 5, so fits very well into our heavier genre as it produces a much meatier sound.

The bass guitar we will use is a Washburn T24 owned by Ben Thorogood who has given permission for actor Harry Thornburn to use during the performance shots in his role of bassist.

We will use a Perl Drum Kit also owned by Ben Thorogood who will also be acting as the drummer in our live shots. The same kit setup will be used as when the track was recorded to ensure instrument syncing is as accurate as possible.

We will also be using a Peavey and an Ashdown guitar amplifier owned by Charlie Green and Harry Thornburn who have agreed to let us use their large amplifiers that will fit in very well to our genre and will enable our live shots to look realistic to a gig style setup.

Microphone, Cables & Stand

Matthew Jones is going to bring two cheap dynamic microphone's similar to what would be seen at a gig, along with cables and a stand so our live shots look as close to a real gig as possible with everything looking in operation for real rather than looking like a simple prop.

Equipment Planning

4 X PARcans & Controller

I have spoken to Matthew Bostock who owns 4 X PARcans & a controller along with tripods to request if we can borrow this equipment for our production. He is allowing us to use his lighting equipment which will be very useful to gain some great effects especially when filming the live performance shots of our band playing.

From my knowledge of lighting I am aware that PARcans give a very wide spread of light and will be used when the whole stage needs to be light, it is also possible I will use them close up as an up-lighting effect to certain features.

Goal Post / T-Bar Lighting Truss

I own a heavy duty Goal Post / T-bar lighting truss that we will use for securing some of the lighting. This truss either can be used as a full lighting bar or as two T-bars which will allow us more flexibility when positioning the lights for our live performance shots to ensure that they are well light with an effective style.

Generator

As some of our possible locations such as 'The Barn' will possibly not contain a mains power supply we have looked into renting a generator. We will certainly require some form of power when filming mainly due to the lighting equipment we plan to use to create a professional looking music video; it is also possible we will need power for special effects such as smoke machines and possibly to power up some of the props to make the video look realistic. Below is the conversation between the contact who is able to rent us the generator and a picture of a similar model & size generator.

Smoke

I own two medium size smoke machines with dense fog fluid that should linger in the air for a reasonable amount of time. It is possible we will use these for our live performance shots to create a more 'gig' like atmosphere along with supporting the lighting in creating a conventional effect.

Profile's & Other Lighting

I have spoken to a few different people about possibly borrowing some profile lights and some extra PARcans / Fresnel's and a dimmer pack which will allow certain characters or instruments to be highlighted in the video with this type of lighting as it has a very narrow and changeable beam of light rather than the PARcan's standard wide wash. These would simply allow us to create better lighting effects within our video rather than a simple 'Lights on / lights off' scenario. The dimmer pack will be required to power and control these types of stage lighting.

Ipod Dock

I own a simple iPod dock at home which can be powered via mains or batteries which we will use to play the track back whilst recording all parts of our video that need either instrument or lip syncing so that we can ensure it is exactly on time with our actual track. This is the same iPod dock and technique as used in our preliminary and as the result was good we have decided to stick with the same method.

Camera/Tripods

A Canon 550D with a 50mm lens will be used as our main camera for the live performance shots. This camera is an 18 mega pixel digital SLR camera which will offer us recording in full HD 1080p movies. After using this camera in our preliminary task we are very comfortable with the quality of the recording and know its capabilities. The 50mm lens we have chosen to use for this camera is in order to create good point of view shots due to the fact a 50mm lens has a field of vision very close to the human eye. This will make viewers feel like they are stood in front of this live performance and make it more of a realistic POV shot.

We will use a Canon 500D with a 15-85mm lens for our secondary camera in the live performance. Reason for this being that it is similar to the 550D in the fact that it still offers full HD recording and will gain us shots that aren't noticeably different from the shots from the 550D. Having a second camera will also enable us to gain more shots when recording which will cut together better than having to record different shots on a different take. By using a different lens for our secondary camera it will allow us to gain a little more variation within our shots to keep them interesting.

The Canon 7D with a 10-22mm lens will be used to record our narrative. This camera also is able to record in full HD and is excellent for shots where the lighting will vary due to the fact it can cope with all lighting conditions. Another main reason behind the use of this camera is that it is weather and dust proof meaning that if the narrative requires certain shots outdoors in poor weather conditions for effect, these can be taken easily without risk of ruining equipment or having to shield it.

Whilst shooting both the narrative and the live performance we will use various tripods and mechanisms to get some interesting shots along with a Glidecam 2000HD which will allow us to do walking tracking shots on all terrain without camera shake in the shot.

Final Locations

Performance
The location we have decided to use for the performance aspect of our video is the barn on a farm just on the outskirts of Bourne, which is owned by the parents of a student in our year. We have chosen this as our performance location as we feel that it will fit into the hardcore genre very well as it is a distinctive building that is similar to venues of gigs where this type of music is played. As we have chosen this location it has a mains power supply that we are free to use therefore meaning we do not have to rely on a generator to power heavy duty light, sound, and effect equipment that could put pressure on a generator when demanding variations of power throughout the performance as the equipment is in use.

Below is a picture of the barn we will be using:

Narrative
For the narrative we will use the surrounding area around the barn and woodland areas in the outskirt of Bourne Woods to take shots of the guy and the girl in love and taking the picture together. We feel that using woodland areas are suitable for our narrative as there is nothing around but trees relating to how alone people can feel after a break in relationship however it can also be a place where couples spend lots of time together where they are away from the rest of the world. This contrast will emphasis how meaningful breaks in relationships are and help create a deep and meaningful narrative within our music video.

Final Narrative

The narrative shots of our music video will be based around the story that a guy and girl are in love and share lots of happy times together where a photos will be taken of them. Towards the end of the video we will see an old hand holding the photo that had been previously taken and then a flame coming through the photo as it is set on fire signifying that the couple had broken up and the hurt feelings where never healed even years after.

We have kept our narrative very simple in order to allow it to flow well with the performance shots and have left it very open to viewers interpretation for the narrative to allow the audience to relate to the video better and create a link between the song and possible experiences they will have most likely have occurred in their life when they have had a break in relationship.

Location - Leicester

Bellow is evidence that we emailed GEC Whetsone Engineering Plant requesting permission to film at the abandoned building in Leicester, which was one of our possible locations. The result of the reply is that we where unable to film at this location due to the surrounding businesses. This is not a major problem as we had looked at three possible locations on the basis that we where aware we may not get permission to film due to the fact other members of my group previously experienced in their AS productions.

Location Research

The first location we looked at was an abandoned building in Leicester; GEC Whetsone is an old engineering plant that used to test early jet engines, it was opened in 1941 and has been constantly used from then on for different things, this has made the building even better as its clearly obvious that the building is run down and over used even before they closed it down in the late 1950’s, now it is closed down it has become wrecked and broken, this is also a very conventional building for us to use for our video.

The second location we have looked at is a barn on the outskirts of Bourne, if we were able to use a barn it would give us a really nice look to a video, this inspiration has come from a music video called ‘Death Toll’ by While She Sleeps, they used a very dark room with a dusty environment, if this is something we can replicate in the barn I think it will be extremely effective. The use of this location means that we are very close to home and can easily go back and get anything we need for the shoot very quickly, making our shooting day more productive.

For our last location, we have thought about using an open, empty factory, we feel this location will be a good set for our music video as it’s something we have seen been used in other hard-core music videos and gives a really nice feel to the video as it gives it more of a large and enhanced feel. The lighting in this location will be easier to manage as we would not have to have any form of electric as we can go off the mains in the building.
