These texts work synergistically together very well with the website
acting as the main hub of the content. This is because we have used the website
to our advantage by embedding the music video onto it and also allowing the
digipak to potentially be sold from it along with band merchandise. Due to the
website being able to hold much more content that can be viewed, it can contain
a lot of information without the possibility of overcrowding space which would
happen on something in a hard copy format like a digipak. On the other hand,
the digipak and music video are able to promote the website as the website will
be one of the top search engine results for any information that relates to the
band or that may be held on the website. As most purchases of digipaks and
views of a music video are majority online via YouTube, it will be very easy to
incorporate links to the website and upon it when searching for the similar
content because of this technology.
In order to reach a large target audience we have used both old and
new media to our advantage. Our music video will be able to be featured on old
media such as music channels and on new media such as Youtube and Facebook. For
our digipak we are also able to use both types of media: old media such as
record stores to purchase the product and CD magazines such as ‘Karrang!’ to
promote the product; consequently for new media they use websites such as
‘Amazon’ to distribute the digipak. Lastly our website due to the fact is part
of a new media invention primarily uses new media, however this is not a bad
thing as the target market of our promotional package would most likely use new
media over old media.
New Media Pros
- · Promotion can be much faster and cheaper using social media sites such as Facebook & Twitter. Information about new releases can be posted and shared to millions of people in a matter of minutes or seconds unlike traditional media where it would take longer to design, create and distribute promotional items.
- · New media links together much easier using website links and embedded content from other relative websites; for instance we have embedded a social media Twitter feed for our band’s profile on our website which allows fans to quickly view more personal information about the band and allows the band to broadcast information to its followers very easily without spending any money.
- · Finally it is more interactive and allows videos, sound recordings, and images to be published without having to go to the effort of creating hard copies of the media which would be more time consuming and cost more.
New Media Cons
- · Content expires very quickly due to the amount of new media content published every single day. This means that it will be forgotten about and replaced much quicker; things such as Tweets and Facebook statuses only appear on news feeds for a limited amount of time before they are replaced by new and more recent ones. This makes the media more meaningless than the traditional media where hardcopies are gathered in a souvenir fashion.
- · A distance can be created between fans and the band where the effort is not made to go out and see the band live; this is because they are able to view the content on new media such as on demand services and YouTube.
- · The Bands income can be less as digital media is cheaper than the old hard copies. Although the content costs less to produce and distribute, there are more people using file-sharing services where they do not pay for the media and obtain it for free.
